Councilman Ray Berzins said the Streets Committee met June 9, 2026 to continue discussion on filling the vacant Mechanic position in the Village’s Service Department and turned the meeting over to Service Director Mr. Blados for details.
Service Director Mr. Blados presented a proposed compensation plan for an entry-level mechanic that includes "a starting wage of $20.00 per hour," with future wage increases tied to the collective bargaining agreement and incentive pay for completion of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications that the Village determines to be beneficial. He told the committee the Village "has been approved to begin the process of becoming a certified CDL training facility," which would allow the Village to provide Commercial Driver’s License training in-house.
Mr. Blados said the mechanic position would not include on-call compensation and that as the position develops there may be opportunities for the mechanic to receive additional training to perform maintenance on Fire Department equipment, "including ambulances." During committee discussion Mr. Blados clarified that employees would be responsible for studying for ASE certification tests and "would not be compensated by the Village for time spent preparing for or taking the exams."
After discussion the Streets Committee directed staff to draft legislation for consideration at a future Council meeting to create the position and implement the proposed compensation and incentive structure. No formal motion text, mover/second, or vote tally was recorded in the minutes.
The meeting record shows no final hiring decision was made; the next procedural step is drafting legislation for Council consideration. There were no further questions and the meeting was adjourned.
