Darian Warren of Wagon Engineering told the board the Yandel Road improvement project from Highway 51 to Smith Car Road and from Smith Car Road to North Old Canton Road is "roughly about 50% complete in terms of overall progress," and that the firm has identified about 80 parcels that will be needed for right-of-way acquisition.
Warren said the contract began in November 2024 and that the project team has focused the current quarter on design-phase critical-path items, especially utility coordination. "We prepared utility conflict exhibits" and have met with providers including AT&T and ExxonMobil to address communication- and gas-line conflicts, he said.
Survey and title research for the corridor have been "substantially completed," Warren said, and plats and legal descriptions have been produced. He described the next step as moving initial parcels into appraisal and acquisition activities and completing the remaining plats "over the next several weeks." On acquisition work, Warren said the team has "identified about 80 parcels, in terms of acquisition that'll be necessary." The firm expects to return to the board with estimated just compensations once valuations are finished.
Warren told the board crews have begun staking properties to show existing and proposed right-of-way lines and curb locations ahead of construction. He said the project will widen the roadway from two lanes to five lanes: "expanding the 2 lane to a 5 lane, road improvement." Environmental permitting for the project has been completed and approved, he added, and "we're still on track in terms of completing design by the end of this year."
A board member asked that the presenter provide a clear map or graphic for distribution: "If you would, make sure that, WMBT gets that information." Warren closed by urging the team to "keep moving as fast as possible," and the board thanked him for the update.
Next steps outlined by the presenter are continuing utility coordination and acquisition work, completing valuations and plats, presenting estimated compensation figures to the board, and finishing the design by the end of the year. No motions or votes were recorded during the update.
