Catherine Strickland asked the Long Beach Mayor and Board of Aldermen for permission to place a memorial plaque at the harbor honoring DJ Follett and offered to pay all costs associated with design, production, installation, and maintenance.
Strickland read a statement describing Follett’s connection to the harbor and asked the city to permit a modest marker. She told the board she would assume full financial responsibility for the memorial.
Board members responded sympathetically and discussed options, including planting a tree with a plaque and possibly incorporating the memorial into a gateway or lighthouse project near the harbor. Alderman 7 and others urged sensitivity and suggested staff and the resident work together on site selection and logistics.
The board moved and carried a motion allowing Strickland to plant a memorial tree on city green space near the harbor and to place a small plaque; the resident will coordinate with city staff on placement and permits.
Mayor and aldermen asked Strickland to meet with city staff to mark the location and proceed with tree planting and plaque installation.
