"This isn't a donation where we're just giving money away and we expect nothing back," Alderman 4 said, adding that the city already provides in-kind services and should seek data showing the event’s benefit to Long Beach.
Board members discussed prior vendor sales and tax-share math, noting that the city receives a small percentage of taxable sales. Officials asked staff to try to retroactively analyze sales spikes during event months and consider performance-based approaches for future funding.
The board also confirmed the city's customary in-kind support for the event, including portable restrooms and trash pickup. The motion to approve the sponsorship language and the customary support passed by voice vote.
Officials asked event organizers to provide clearer post-event accounting in future sponsorship agreements so the city can evaluate whether the contribution provides a net benefit to residents.
