Board honors Linda Hitchens for 14 years; Laurel students and coach receive recognition

The Laurel School District Board of Education opened its meeting with tributes to outgoing board member Linda Hitchens and recognition of students and staff.
Speakers praised Hitchens for 14 years of service. A speaker identified as representing the House of Representatives (Speaker 4) thanked Hitchens "on behalf of the House of Representatives" and credited her long service and leadership for positive effects on students, teachers and staff. Multiple trustees and attendees recounted Hitchenssteady leadership and mentorship to new board members.
The board also heard from guest Gina Voges (Speaker 7), who introduced Laurel Intermediate sixth-grader Luke Massey. Voges said Massey was selected as one of 28 students from about 200 applicants to attend the NBA Math Hoops program in New York City, a program funded by Learn Fresh and the NBA and WNBA. "Please join me in congratulating Luke Massey," Voges said. Luke spoke briefly about the game format and thanked the district for the opportunity to travel to the event.
Chair and district staff then introduced David King (Speaker 9), recognized Monday as Delaware's 2026 track and field coach of the year. King thanked assistant coaches by name and invited the community to attend practices and meets.
The meeting included a call for applause, an invitation to a post-meeting dessert, and a Polaroid photograph of honorees. There were no public commenters signed up during this segment.
