Laurel board honors custodial, maintenance and IT staff for intensive summer work

The Laurel School District Board of Education and Superintendent recognized maintenance, custodial and IT staff for a heavy summer of facility and technology work to get schools ready for the 2025–26 year.
Daryl Downs, introduced by the superintendent as head of maintenance, thanked the board and listed projects completed over the summer including track refinishing, gym floor refinishing, sidewalk work, replacing locks and signage, and preparing classrooms for first-grade moves. "I've been in facilities in one district or another for the past 26 years, and this is the busiest summer I've ever been involved in," Downs said.
Mike Brown and the IT team were called forward and credited with supporting a vendor transition to Infinite Campus, readying Chromebooks, rewiring parts of North Laurel, and installing sound systems and classroom technology. Brown described the transition to a new student-information system as difficult but said staff "owned it" and worked to ensure attendance, grading and parent contact were available on the first day.
Board members and the superintendent called up individual custodial and IT staff for certificates and a group photograph; the public-record minutes list many staff by name who were recognized on stage.
What was recognized - Major facility projects and classroom preparation for a two-school transition and the 2025–26 school year. - IT work to deploy Infinite Campus functions, prepare Chromebooks and install classroom audio/visual equipment.
Next steps The recognitions were ceremonial; no board action or district funding decisions were made at the presentation. Staff and board paused for group photos and thanks.
