The Village of Irvington announced it has been awarded a $382,316 Community Reforestation grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to support long-term restoration and stewardship of Irvington Woods.
Village staff said the grant will fund invasive-species removal, planting of native trees and shrubs, and installation of deer protection to support natural regeneration. Staff described the woods as “one of Irvington’s most treasured natural resources” that provides wildlife habitat, watershed protection and outdoor education. Planning and contractor procurement are underway, with field restoration work expected to begin this fall, officials said.
A trustee noted the award builds on previous grants and brings the village’s recent reforestation funding to roughly $500,000 in total. "This grant represents a significant investment in the future health and resilience of the forest," village staff said.
Officials said the project will use the DEC funding alongside volunteer programs and educational activities, and the village will share updates as the work proceeds. The board did not take any votes on the grant at the meeting; staff said implementation details and contracting are in earlier planning stages.
