Dawson County commissioners approve planning commission term ordinance, deny tax assessor reappointment and greenlight road paving and maintenance contracts

The Dawson County Board of Commissioners on March 6 approved several routine and substantive items, including an ordinance to align Planning Commission members’ terms, the denial of a tax assessor reappointment, and multiple contracts for road work and maintenance.
Vice Chairman Commissioner Chris Gaines opened and, hearing no public comment, closed the public hearing on "An Ordinance to Provide for Terms of Members of the Planning Commission of Dawson County." The board voted 4-0 to adopt the ordinance and to adjust current members’ terms to conform to the new provisions (motion recorded as Stowers/Turkett).
In unfinished business, the board reconsidered the reappointment of Tom Camp to the Board of Tax Assessors (term through December 2027), an item tabled from the Feb. 20 session. The commission voted 4-0 to deny Camp’s reappointment (motion recorded as Stowers/Bruce).
Under new business the board approved a Memorandum of Agreement with Etowah Water & Sewer Authority and the Dawson County Humane Society to pave Martin Road. The minutes state project funding will come from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax VII (SPLOST VII) and contributions from the authority and the Humane Society; the recorded vote was 4-0 in favor (Stowers/Turkett).
The commissioners also approved IFB #451-24, awarding an annual roundabouts and gateway maintenance contract to Tri Scapes LLC for $27,303 to be paid from Hotel/Motel funds (motion passed 4-0, Stowers/Turkett). The board approved a Temporary Labor Agreement with North Georgia Works to support a county beautification initiative (motion passed 4-0, Stowers/Turkett).
The consent agenda was approved 4-0 (Stowers/Bruce) and included acceptance of a Georgia Forestry Commission Volunteer Fire Assistance 50/50 grant totaling $10,000 (county share $5,000), acceptance of resignations from Sam Gutherie and Jim Perdue on the Board of Tax Assessors, and a recommendation to appoint Terry Wolak as Deputy County Clerk.
During public comment, Mike Turner of Dawsonville said he is a longstanding local landowner and offered his volunteer assistance to the county, saying he was not seeking elected office. The board subsequently entered executive session to discuss personnel and real estate (motion passed 4-0, Stowers/Bruce) and later voted to come out of executive session (motion passed 3-0, Stowers/Turkett).
