Economic development staff briefed the Business and Economic Development Committee on Van Air Corporation, a nonprofit development entity that manages the Bangor Innovation Center and several airport properties.
Jagita, the economic development officer, said the corporation’s purpose is to make nimble decisions on economic development around airport properties and to operate the innovation center. She described recent activity—tenant recruitment, modest building maintenance, signage and interior upgrades—and said the organization has not convened a functioning board for some time because of repeated failures to reach quorum.
Councilors asked for a detailed list of Van Air properties, the number of leases and associated income and expense information so the committee can determine whether lease charges are covering operating costs. Councilor Mallor asked how funds had been expended without an active board; Jagita said staff approvals were coordinated with a city contact (Anne) and that expenditures have been limited to routine maintenance and small repairs.
Jagita noted that the Bangor Innovation Center retains operator status for a foreign trade zone, which could provide opportunities similar to prior foreign‑trade activity. Committee members encouraged staff to convene a board and requested a follow‑up packet showing property inventories and financials.
The committee did not take formal action on Van Air but agreed to pursue more information and resume board meetings after the budget season.
