Resident urges faster school-safety fixes; council and police pledge follow-up

Jim Moriarty, who identified himself as an Estacada resident, urged immediate action on several school-safety gaps discovered during a recent Safe Routes to School walk audit.
"We found that within the school safety zones, it's recommended that we should have a new pedestrian flashing lights or rectangular rapid flash beacon and signage at the intersection of Northwest 3rd Avenue and Northwest Main Street, 1 at Northeast 6th Avenue and Northeast Main, and 1 at the intersection of Northeast 6th Avenue and North Broadway," Moriarty said, listing three intersections he recommended as priorities. He also cited a Feb. 13 traffic collision at Northeast 2nd Avenue and Northeast Main Street where poor street lighting contributed to a near-injury.
Chief (first name Jesus) and councilors discussed enforcement and engineering responses. The chief said on-foot enforcement during the walk made stopping vehicles impractical and emphasized "some more directed patrols" as a near-term enforcement step. Councilors raised pedestrian-level lighting and asked staff to follow up with PGE; staff noted PGE had been contracted to install lights on some poles near the school and that additional materials ordering could affect timing.
No formal vote was taken; council members asked staff to return with updates on the three intersections and on options for pedestrian-level lighting and beacons.
