The Coffee County Capital Outlay Committee voted Feb. 5 to approve a paint color and a revised approach to restoring the interior hallway of the old courthouse after contractors found the original plaster too deteriorated to be restored.
S4 told the committee that contractors removed paneling and asbestos flooring and discovered the plaster behind the paneling had deteriorated so extensively it could not be replastered. "Once they took all the paneling off, they realized that the plaster that was on there was deteriorated so bad that it wouldn't be able to be put back on," S4 said, noting the state grantor approved re-sheetrocking the hallway with a plan to add a few windows and displays that reflect the building’s history.
Why it matters: the change preserves the building’s usable interior while accommodating grant requirements. The committee approved the proposed historic-appropriate paint color for the sheetrock finish by voice vote.
