Mayor and Council report expanded Columbus police resources and Zone 2 coordination as growth continues

Mayor Steager and Council President Laurie Amick updated the Council on a recent tour and briefing with Columbus Division of Police and other partners about growth north of U.S. 33 and public-safety planning.
Amick said the Columbus Division is installing additional Flock cameras in Zone 2, expanding drone deployment for festivals and special events, and operating a Real-Time Crime Center that can alert Canal Winchester officials when incidents could affect the city. The division is also adding helicopters to its aviation fleet.
Officials said Zone 2 has been redistricted into smaller coverage areas so officers can provide more focused patrols, and efforts are underway to keep officers assigned to the same area to improve familiarity and oversight. Amick described a new Advocacy Crisis Team aimed at domestic-violence response and a NextGen Safety Initiative focused on chronic young adult and juvenile offenders.
"It's not because there's more crime—it's because there are more people," Amick said, explaining the emphasis on staying ahead of growth rather than reacting to an uptick in crime.
Council thanked staff for arranging the tour and noted ongoing coordination with the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office. No formal action was taken; the briefing was provided for information and follow-up.
