Selectboard approves Certificate of Highway Miles and readies mowing RFP; road conditions and treatment options discussed

On Jan. 12 the Town of Orange Selectboard approved the annual Certificate of Highway Miles and reviewed a draft request for proposals for mowing services.
Kevin Wilson moved to approve the Certificate of Highway Miles as printed; Steve Simpson seconded and the board voted unanimously. The Selectboard reviewed a draft mowing RFP that will be posted for 30 days with bids to open at the following Selectboard meeting. Members noted that any contractor employees would need workers' compensation coverage as required by state law.
Road crew and maintenance updates followed. The board reviewed an investigation of a Jan. 2 complaint about road conditions; crews cleared fire hydrants after icy conditions were reported and the Vermont State Police complimented the roads as among the best conditions seen in years. An Allstate inspection of Tucker Road is scheduled for the coming week. A resident called Eric told the board he will research costs and supply options comparing chloride and oil for icy-road treatment and dust control.
The Selectboard also discussed logistics related to a new truck (a request for photos for the town newsletter) and potential relocation of the town garage water system. The board did not adopt a final policy on road treatment materials at the meeting; the issue was left for further research and future discussion.
