During a Utah State Board of Education training on end-of-year Acadience and RISE data, a participant identified as Celeste reported that her breakout group spent most of its time discussing a recurring "second-grade slump" in reading performance.
Celeste, speaking during the session’s report-back, said her group and district colleagues are trying to pinpoint why performance dips in second grade, observing that assessments move from skill-based beginning-of-year measures to greater emphasis on accuracy and fluency later in the year. "Our our biggest part of our conversation was really about the 2nd grade slump and, like, what do we need to analyze or figure out for that grade level?" she said.
USBE staff encouraged participants to use the Pathways of Progress and cohort visualizations in ALO to isolate where students move between benchmark bands and to consider instructional adjustments, scheduling, or targeted interventions. The session did not resolve the cause; participants requested more examples and follow-up support from USBE to test whether assessment format, instructional pacing, or other local factors explain the slump.
The report-back underscores a common operational question for districts: how to interpret cohort transitions between assessment types and what targeted supports will reduce mid-elementary dips in reading performance. Wright and Brooks offered to assist districts in locating specific student lists and filters in ALO and recommended follow-up contact for more detailed diagnostics.
