Myrtle Creek hears community updates: branding project, animal-rescue fundraiser, Halloween street closure and Visitor Center progress

Council received a series of community updates Sept. 2 focused on branding, animal rescue, events and the Visitor Center.
Kernin Steinhauer updated the council on the Imagine Myrtle Creek branding project, saying phase one (listening) had low turnout but about 130 surveys were completed; next steps discussed include targeted business invitations, a first-impression study and a SWOT analysis if the council elects to continue. Steinhauer offered to donate his time to complete the project.
Lei Catlett, representing Whisker Warriors, reported that "during July and August, 21 cats were spayed and neutered," noted that March flooding shifted part of the Millsite Park colony toward the Public Works shop and announced the group’s Spaghetti Feed fundraiser on Sept. 20 at the Myrtle Creek Community Center.
Jessica Sharon requested a street closure for a Halloween event called Wicked Walkabout. Councilor Rick Held noted the municipal code (MCMC 10.05.050) grants the City Administrator authority to approve street closures and asked that the matter be referred to the City Administrator Pro Tem. Susan Harris, Chamber president, said the Chamber will help sponsor the event and that it can be covered under their insurance; council asked staff to confirm public-works needs such as cone pickup.
City Recorder Joanna Bilbrey and Chamber President Susan Harris also updated the council on the Visitor Center: final electrical and building inspections are scheduled, internet and sign wiring are complete and staff training and additional sign programming are pending. The Chamber plans a Member Appreciation Visitor Center Tour on Oct. 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Community items that were informational only were not the subject of council action at this meeting.
