Miltona Township adopts assessment rolls for Miltona Bay and Smokey Timbers roads; hearings set Dec. 2

The board accepted Resolution 2024-13, the assessment roll for Miltona Bay Road, on a motion by Matt Kugler, seconded by Andy Anderson; the vote was recorded as 3-0. Exhibit A attached to the resolution lists parcel-level assessments totaling $85,355.98, with most parcels assessed $2,081.85 and one parcel (42-0800-200) assessed $68,701.18. The resolution offers property owners two payment options: pay in full to the clerk by Dec. 2, 2024, or elect installment payments over five years with the first installment placed on property taxes beginning May 15, 2025; installments will bear interest of 6.55% per year.
The board also approved Resolution 2024-14, accepting the assessment roll for a portion of Smokey Timbers Road, on a motion by Andy Anderson, seconded by Matt Kugler, carried 3-0. The Smokey Timbers Exhibit A lists parcel assessments totaling $33,707.73, with individual assessments ranging from $1,982.81 to $3,965.61. Payment options mirror those for Miltona Bay Road, with a full-payment deadline of Dec. 3, 2024, or five annual installments beginning May 15, 2025, at 6.55% interest.
The board directed the clerk to transmit certified duplicates of the assessments to the county auditor for extension on property tax lists, per the resolutions. Assessment hearings are scheduled on Dec. 2: Miltona Bay Road at 6:00 p.m., followed by Smokey Timbers Road at 6:30 p.m., both at the Miltona Community Center, before the township's regular monthly meeting.
Public commenters raised questions about paving and petition procedures during the meeting. Linda Doerfler asked about the petition process to request paving on Chicago Club Lane NE, Chicago Club Road and Minnesouri Club Road NE; Kate Phelps asked several procedural questions about the Miltona Bay Road paving process. The board noted next steps and the upcoming hearings where property owners may voice objections or seek clarification.
Next steps: certified assessment rolls will be sent to the county auditor and the hearings on Dec. 2 will provide a formal opportunity for affected property owners to comment before assessments are finalized.
