Roxbury committee delays exclusive space approval for Roxbury Roots over storage, kitchen and occupancy concerns

Committee members reviewed a Roxbury Roots proposal on July 8 and expressed strong support for the program while declining to grant exclusive, secured use of shared spaces until several operational issues are resolved.
Committee member Kristen Getler described an interim building-use request form she created to centralize requests and forward information to the fire marshal while inspection results are pending. Members said the form works as an interim process and allows staff to track repeat or first/second violations pending the fire inspection outcome.
Discussion of the Roxbury Roots proposal focused on logistics: members raised concerns about exclusive use of rooms that could be shared later (including the nurse's office), where donated library books should be stored while the Roxbury Free Library processes them, and the siting of the facility's oil tank. Committee members also noted Community Hall restrictions: the hall cannot be used for cooking that requires an exhaust hood (oils are not permitted; only baking and boiling) and the room's allowable occupancy has been reduced.
The committee said the overall reaction to Roots was positive but that those outstanding operational questions must be resolved before granting exclusive keys or locked access to shared spaces. Committee member Heather Holter will speak with Roots to reiterate the committee's conversion criteria and outline outstanding concerns and next steps.
