Panel advances bill blocking restoration of voting rights for out-of-state felony treason convictions

Senator Bernt explained the bill would treat treason convictions consistently whether they occurred in Idaho or another state and said the change would close a loophole noticed by Representative Bruce Skaug. Secretary of State Phil McGrane told the committee Representative Skaug had observed the gap and the measure was brought forward to ensure consistent treatment of treason convictions across states.
Senator Harris moved to send H 698 to the floor with a do-pass recommendation; Senator Ruchti seconded the motion. The motion carried by voice vote. The committee forwarded the bill to the full Senate.
