The Parkston City Council approved a slate of routine financial, licensing and personnel items during its May 12 regular meeting.
Key approvals included acceptance of April claims (with a $2,750 addition to Schoenfish & Co. for the 2025 Annual Report); authorization of malt-beverage licenses for Dollar General, 12 Mile Creek Brewery, Casey’s General Store, Agland Coop and Suds Stop following a public hearing; and approval of the 2025 Annual Report.
Council adopted Resolution No. 26-02 to enter into an agreement with Fink Law Office, P.C. for city attorney services related to code enforcement, and voted to publish the city’s noxious weed and grass height policy.
The council approved an amended quote of $4,274.46 to Joe Reiser Construction to replace a tripping-hazard sidewalk in front of the library, and the equipment committee was authorized to establish price ranges for surplus items; the council declared culverts, a Toro bagger mower and computer equipment as surplus.
Community support and small donations were approved: $3,500 to the Commercial Club for fireworks and a $500 donation to the gun club (the gun club lease was also approved; recorded votes show Scott Kniffen voted no on the lease and Dale Hofer abstained on the donation). The council also set city-wide cleanup dates in June.
On personnel, council entered an executive session to discuss hiring lifeguards and later approved hiring Brody Overby as a lifeguard at $14.50/hr and Mato Maxwell for the bag room at $12.50/hr. Council additionally adjusted wages to meet minimum-wage requirements and set lifeguard wages for Aalehya Wilson and Anna Weber at $14.50/hr; motions carried.
The council discussed a tentative June 1 pool opening and scheduled meetings with pool staff and the parks committee. The meeting adjourned at 9:41 P.M.
