Commissioners discuss courthouse security upgrades and fire-hall repairs

Commissioners reviewed findings from a courthouse security walk by an outside reviewer who had inspected counties statewide. Staff reported the reviewer praised the courthouse’s hardwired security but recommended several modest changes to reduce vulnerability, including locking the courtroom when not in use, keypad access for doors, inexpensive chain hooks for the vault and ballistic paneling behind bench areas to protect staff.

"He said to lock the courtroom when it's not being used," a county staff member reported, summarizing the reviewer’s advice. The group discussed trade-offs including camera placement and privacy concerns for closed proceedings; commissioners agreed to consult the presiding judge about recording and camera policies before specifying camera locations or functions.

Separately, participants reviewed work at the fire hall and community center: insulation installs, an uninsulated garage door, a back door that may need framing or attic access to fix insulation issues, and trip hazards from recent concrete work. Several speakers suggested grant-funded upgrades and agreed to seek estimates for heavier-duty doors and matching stain work to unify interior wood finishes. Fire-extinguisher placement, first-aid kits and other safety items were also discussed.

Commissioners noted one possible funding source: opioid-settlement funds used elsewhere for security projects, and a rural tourism grant of up to $75,000 as a potential source for exterior door and lighting improvements.

Next steps: staff will coordinate with law enforcement to source ballistic paneling, consult the judge on courtroom recording policy, collect contractor quotes for door and threshold repairs, and explore grant options to fund improvements.
