Forsyth board adopts personnel and student-records policy updates, and public-participation policy

At the meeting the Forsyth County Board of Education approved several policy updates and routine agenda items by unanimous vote.

The board adopted changes to policy GARH (employee leaves and absences) after staff noted the policy incorporates provisions required by recently passed House legislation related to maternal leave. Derek Hershey presented the policy and told the board legal counsel had reviewed it and there were no public comments during the month it sat for feedback.

The board also adopted updates to policy JR (student records), which amend what student information is included in the FERPA directory and were presented for adoption after a 30-day public review with no comments. Mike Evans and Kathy Carpenter were cited in the presentation of that update.

Policy BCBI (public participation in board meetings) was likewise adopted after prior review; Dr. Josh Lowe presented the policy and the board approved it following the standard 30-day review timeline.

Other formal actions included approval of the consent agenda and approval of grouped personnel items (multiple a/b/c lists) following an executive session; all votes on these items were recorded as unanimous. The meeting closed after the board moved to adjourn and recorded a unanimous vote to do so.

What happens next: staff will implement the updated policies per normal administrative processes; personnel and budget items will proceed under approved motions.
