Nixa board recap: junior high renovations to open this fall; members flag concerns about proposed A–F school grades

Jessica Broadway, a member of the Nixa Board of Education, delivered a summary of the board's July meeting and highlighted several items of local interest.
Broadway said the board toured Nixa Junior High to view additions and renovations paid for by the April 2023 bond issue. "The additions and renovations will be open this fall for students to be able to use," she said, and the district plans a ribbon-cutting on Aug. 26.
Broadway reported that Brenda Rance briefed the board on expected assessed valuation for the coming year. She said the combination of new tax rates, new construction and different property types — together with personal property values — will determine the district's approach at the tax-rate hearing scheduled in August.
On state accountability, Broadway said Jared Webster presented an early look at a proposed A–F letter grading system for schools. She relayed the board's concerns that "if NCSSA is already doing well, it may not be reflected in the grade and NCSSA may look like it's not doing well when in fact we are," and noted that differing metrics across districts could limit consistent measurement statewide. Broadway described the presentation as a first look and said the district will wait for final rules before drawing conclusions.
David List reviewed the Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP); Broadway said the district is preparing a five-year implementation plan to roll out items approved earlier this spring.
Under the consent agenda the board paid bills, approved employment updates and ratified agreements related to district business. Broadway also said the board continued its review of board policies and completed a review of facilities and grounds. She noted the auditor gave positive comments on the district's recently completed audit.
Alex Bryant, the district's MSBA delegate, reviewed summer MSBA events and encouraged the board and public to stay informed about issues on the August ballot that could affect the district. Next steps the board is watching include the August tax-rate hearing and the final state decisions on the proposed A–F grading system; the CSIP implementation schedule is expected to be set in the coming months.
