At its April 20 meeting, the Sandgate Selectboard said it will order a state test kit to check the Town Hall well for lead and a full panel of possible contaminants after the Department of Environmental Conservation’s ground water protection division recommended at-the-well testing.
The recommendation came after a board member reported contact with the DEC. The DEC representative suggested testing at the well to determine whether contaminants are present in groundwater or arise from internal plumbing. Selectboard member John Phelps said he will order the state kit and the board discussed shopping for treatment systems; if testing and treatment do not resolve drinking-water concerns, the board said it could provide a water cooler for accessible drinking water.
A resident, Eleanor Lacross, called to question the town’s plan to use a hot-water storage tank at the Town Garage under a MERP grant rather than an on-demand system. Phelps told Lacross that an on-demand system would not heat water at the rate required to wash town trucks; the minutes record the explanation but show no formal vote or final decision on which system will be purchased.
The board also noted recent purchases and pending equipment requests related to facilities: two new computers were purchased last week for the Clerk/Treasurer and the Listers, and the board is waiting for a list and quote from Mike Oltedal for cameras for the Town Garage and other hardware. Contractor updates indicated new windows will arrive in about six weeks with roughly one week for installation after delivery.
