The City of Alice council voted July 21 to accept $44,000 from Gilmos County to buy a gateway device that will let the county and city radio systems interoperate in emergencies. The motion to accept the funds passed by voice vote after a brief presentation.
Fire Chief Thomas introduced the two firefighters honored earlier in the meeting and described the communications item to the council. "This device is a device that will connect their radio system to our radio system and allow us to all be able to communicate together," Thomas said, explaining the $44,000 covers that specific gateway component. He also said the entire communications upgrade is "probably close to 1,000,000 dollars," with other grant and operational funds covering the remainder.
Council member (speaker 5) moved to approve the acceptance of funds; the mayor (speaker 2) seconded and the council approved the motion by voice vote. No councilor registered an objection during the recorded voice vote.
The resolution authorizes the city manager and chief of police to sign any documents needed to accept the payment and complete purchase and installation of the device. City staff said the gateway will support cross-jurisdictional emergency communications once installed and integrated with ongoing upgrade work.
