Broken Bow council adopts ordinance vacating Washington Street

The Broken Bow City Council voted to adopt Ordinance No. 1248 on Oct. 26, 2021, vacating a short section of Washington Street south of South N to allow property owners Clint and Lori Lambrecht to expand their house. Councilmember Jacob Holcomb introduced the ordinance and moved to suspend the statutory three-reading rule so the council could consider final passage the same night. The motion to suspend the rules passed on a 3–1 roll call vote (Holcomb, David Schmidt and Chris Myers voting aye; Larry Miller voting nay).
City Administrator Dan Knoell briefed the council before the hearing, telling members the Lambrechts own the properties on both sides of the street and that no utilities or easements cross the short segment. City Attorney Jason White explained the right of remonstrance, which gives the public 30 days to petition against a street vacation.
After the ordinance was read by title, the council voted on final passage. The final roll call mirrored the suspension vote: Holcomb, Schmidt and Myers voted to adopt Ordinance No. 1248; Miller voted no. Mayor Rod Sonnichsen declared the ordinance adopted. The vacation clears the way for the Lambrechts' planned expansion, subject to the 30-day right of remonstrance.
