The Mackinac County Board of Commissioners on May 28, 2025, voted unanimously to cover the remainder of 2025 health-care costs for Nancy Kaspers, whose husband, county employee Mike Kasper, recently died. The action followed a request from County Clerk Hillary Vowell that the board provide the assistance.
Clerk Hillary Vowell told the board the funds to cover the costs had already been budgeted. Commissioner Judy St. Louis-Scott moved to approve the request and Commissioner John Kling seconded. The motion passed on a roll-call vote with all five commissioners voting yes (Austin Kimberling, John Kling, Mike Patrick, Daryl Schroeder and Judy St. Louis-Scott).
The request was handled during the business portion of the special meeting and no public comment was recorded. The board did not provide a dollar figure during the session and did not attach additional conditions to the coverage; the clerk stated only that the funds were available in the current budget.
The approval provides immediate, short-term coverage through the remainder of the year; the board did not discuss any longer-term policy changes to employee benefits at the May 28 meeting.
