Appling County officials say regional library trustees tabled policy discussions; county monitoring developments

Appling County officials told the Board of Commissioners on May 2 that they attended an Okefenokee Regional Library Board of Trustees meeting on May 1 that drew roughly 200 people and included discussion of library policies on displays and restroom use. County Manager Al Meadows said the trustees tabled the discussion and that Appling County, as part of the regional library system, is following the issue closely.
Meadows said attendees focused on library policies "that allow displays of sexuality and restroom facilities being utilized by the person's biological sex," and that the trustees deferred further action until more information could be obtained. Meadows said the matter has the Board of Commissioners' full attention. Mike Dyal, a local library board member and regional board member, spoke to the commissioners to thank them for their support; Commissioner Daryl Edwards also publicly thanked Mr. Dyal during the meeting.
The county minutes do not record any formal action by the Appling County Board of Commissioners on library policy at this meeting; Meadows indicated only that the county will seek more information before the trustees meet again. There was no administrative directive or vote recorded by the commissioners regarding changes to library policy.
