Appling County renews five-year School Resource Officer agreement for seven officers

Appling County commissioners unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement June 4 that will fund seven School Resource Officers (SROs) for a five-year period beginning July 1, 2024.
County Manager Al Meadows presented the agreement, which formalizes placement and cost-sharing between Appling County, the Appling County Sheriff's Office and the Appling County School District through June 30, 2029. The board recorded that the county's portion will be 30% while the Board of Education will pay 70% of positions and associated costs.
Sheriff Mark Melton addressed the board and confirmed the SRO positions were included in the sheriff's budget and that the program "has worked well," according to the minutes. Commissioner Doug Harris moved to approve the agreement; Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson seconded the motion and the board voted unanimously to adopt the five-year agreement.
Next steps: The agreement will take effect July 1, 2024. The minutes do not list a detailed cost per officer or total annual cost to the county beyond the stated 30% share.
