Cadence Academy singled out as key dependency for Ridgefield pre-K expansion; town talks needed

Consultant Mike (MP Planning) said Scenario A2 assumes reclaiming the Cadence site for pre‑K and ‘‘Cadence starts at a 2 and then flows down through all the options.’’ Mike and the administration described an A2 fit that would add eight full‑day integrated pre‑K classrooms; based on the consultants' assumptions (about 15 students per classroom), Mike said ‘‘8 classrooms times 15 would give us about 120 full time seats for an integrated program.’’
Administration responded that Cadence is controlled by town partners, not the school district. The district's administration stated explicitly that ‘‘we don't have authority over that site at all’’ and that discussions with the town will be necessary in parallel to the master-plan work. Committee members urged beginning those conversations sooner rather than later so scenario development reflects realistic site availability.
Committee members also asked about contingencies if Cadence is unavailable. Consultants said the district would have to consider building pre‑K capacity at Veterans Park (shown in Scenario E) or keep and retrofit Branchville — options that would raise capital needs and change utilization outcomes. Pat (consultant) flagged a design constraint tied to Veterans Park: the local historic‑district boundary cuts through the current building, meaning any alterations will have an additional review layer, though proposed new-school sites to the east would fall outside the boundary.
What’s next: the committee asked administration and consultants to open preliminary discussions with town partners about Cadence, to model capital implications if Cadence is off the table, and to bring those results back alongside reconciled budget totals and sensitivity analyses before the board presentation in the fall.
