Appling County approves $48,000 message-board purchase under Hazard Mitigation Grant

Appling County commissioners approved the purchase of electronic message boards financed primarily by a 2019 Hazard Mitigation Grant during the March 7 meeting.
Brent Carter of the Appling Emergency Management Agency requested board approval and said: "The total costs were $48,000 with $36,000 being paid by federal funds; $4800 paid by state; and remaining $7200 to be paid by county." The items were non-budgeted for EMA and would be paid from the county general fund before expected reimbursements; Carter said the electronic boards include a five-year warranty on electronic components.
Commissioner Randy Sellers moved to approve the purchase and Commissioner Daryl Edwards seconded; the motion passed unanimously. County staff said most grant-funded portions should be reimbursed in approximately 30 days.
The purchase aims to improve hazard messaging and emergency communications across the county; the board approved using county general funds to cover the immediate expense with anticipated grant reimbursements.
