Lake Alfred approves design contract for library expansion ahead of $2.5M project

The Lake Alfred City Commission on June 22 approved Task Order No. 5 with Furr, Wegman & Banks for design services to expand the city library.
The task order covers architectural, structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical design work, plus permitting and construction administration. The city has budgeted $2,500,000 for the library expansion to be paid from recreation impact fees; the city also reported $201,632.64 in private donations and a pending $500,000 state funding request.
Parks and Recreation Director Emily Deal said the expansion "would be a multi-use space incorporating a computer lab, class/meeting room space, study rooms, and a teen room," and added the design aims to create a community-center feel. Resident David Joseph asked about current membership and usage; Deal said the expansion would increase technology access and programming space.
The commission approved the $147,046 task order unanimously. Staff will proceed with design and permitting work and return with construction documents and further budget details.
