Bethania commissioners adopt agenda, approve minutes and set Sept. meeting; mayor to seek cultural-resources input on trail plans

At the Aug. 8 Bethania Board of Commissioners meeting Mayor Brent Rockett and two commissioners approved the agenda and minutes, authorized a letter about road closures, discussed bridge and trail rehab and possible spending on state land, and rescheduled September’s meeting to Sept. 5.
Mayor Brent Rockett called the Town of Bethania Board of Commissioners to order at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2024, with Commissioners Tom Beroth and Kenneth Wolff in attendance and Commissioners Michelle Leonard and Johanna Brown absent. Commissioner Tom Beroth gave the invocation and the board unanimously adopted the agenda after Beroth moved to do so.
Commissioner Kenneth Wolff moved to approve the minutes of the June 13 regular meeting; that motion also passed unanimously and the board signed the minutes. Commissioner Tom Beroth later reviewed fiscal-year financial reports through June 30, 2024, saying the town finished the year under budgeted expenditures.
Town Clerk Karen Keller reported a confrontation between panhandlers and the Chair of Elders at Bethania Moravian Church and said deputy patrols will increase in the area. Keller also told the board that "honey from Bethania bees is now on sale in the Visitor Center." She reported the town issued 28 citations in June, all for speeding, with an average recorded over-speed of 20.75 mph. Keller reminded the board that the countywide Hazard Mitigation Plan is on a five-year cycle and that Bethania must participate in the next update (current plan expires September 2025) to remain eligible for state and federal disaster funding.
The board heard several community and administrative updates: Mayor Rockett said he has been in contact with Lumos about fiber-optic installation and expects work to occur within a few months, and the board discussed three houses for sale in town and the Millstone venue at Bethania Mill, which is not taking bookings after Dec. 31, 2024. The board agreed Mayor Rockett will forward Procurement Guidelines to commissioners for review and will draft a letter to the Department of Cultural Resources about proposed trail and bridge work related to the town’s memorandum of understanding.
Commissioners agreed to solicit input from absent members Michelle Leonard and Johanna Brown on items that remain under discussion. Commissioner Kenneth Wolff moved to reschedule the regular September meeting from Thursday, Sept. 12, to Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, at 6:30 p.m.; the motion passed unanimously. Commissioner Tom Beroth moved to adjourn at 8:06 p.m.; that motion also passed unanimously.
