Alabama parole board denies several paroles, grants mix of pardons and conditional paroles

Victim relatives and victim-service representatives spoke against parole in several high-profile cases recorded in the minutes. At the hearing for Johnny J. Knighton (AIS# 116862), family members including Selina Musgrove, Carolyn Lawrence, Jessica Pitts and Annie Craighead, joined by VOCAL representative Ky' Toria Lawson and India Eaves from the Attorney General's Office (VSO), urged denial; the board denied parole and set a reset date of August 2030. The minutes show similar victim-opposed appearances and denials in other cases, including Maxwell R. Guthrie (AIS# 130353), denied with a reset date of August 2027, and Corderell Oliver (AIS# 243970), denied with a reset date of August 2029.
The board granted several forms of relief. The minutes record a conditional parole for Jasmine B. Johnson (AIS# 286300); the board required completion of placement in an approved halfway house, use of a GPS ankle monitor, participation in NA/AA and mental health follow-up, a drug assessment upon release, and referral to the Equal Justice Initiative for reentry services. The board also granted full pardons restoring "all civil and political rights" to Alex Hernandez-Crespo (AIS# 306234) and Brent M. Curtis (AIS# 823246). Other recorded pardons and partial restorations include a restricted pardon for Ryan K. Maxwell (relief from the habitual offender act and firearms disabilities), a pardon with similar restrictions for Kristal D. Kirkland, and voting-rights-only outcomes for Calvin M. Willis and Ellis K. Langford.
Several paroles were granted with reentry and supervision conditions. The minutes show Michael J. Holloway (AIS# 129313) was granted parole conditioned on completion of the Perry County Probation/Parole Reentry Education Program (PREP), GPS monitoring, mental-health follow-up and a drug assessment. Donald R. Scott (AIS# 170320) was granted parole with required completion of a substance-abuse program, placement in an approved halfway house, GPS monitoring, mental-health follow-up and drug assessment on release.

The minutes do not record roll-call vote tallies by individual board member for each item, only the outcome of the board's vote and, in some cases, the reset date or conditions attached to a grant.
