Main Street reports fundraising, events and small grants; Renew Castle open house and $10,000 for YMCA repairs approved

The Main Street presenter said a jail-and-bail fundraiser "raised several thousand dollars" for operations, promoted a "Dog Days of Summer" event and the grand opening of Scribe Dine In at 1333 Broad, and asked the commission to consider creating incentives to reduce ground-floor vacancy downtown. The presenter noted one business’s experience receiving a $10,000 American Express small-business grant that staff said "quite literally saved her business," using that example to frame the scale of potential incentives.
Renew Castle will host an open house Sunday, July 26, at the Church Street Gym (the old YMCA) from 3 to 5 p.m., staff said; Renew Castle has acquired two buildings and reached an initial fundraising goal of $100,000.
On BRAF obligations, staff explained a revised reporting format that consolidated earlier rounds and listed project obligations for round 4. The commission approved $10,000 to help stabilize 1201 Church Street (the old YMCA) for roof repair and interior remediation once Renew Castle takes ownership. Commissioners also discussed work at 309 South Main (the Elks), noting possible roof, window, kitchen and patio-fence repairs depending on final scope.
Commissioners raised concerns about debris and people sheltering in a walkway east of the Church Street Gym; staff agreed to inspect the area and look into property-line or easement remedies.
Next steps: staff will inspect the reported walkway, proceed with the approved YMCA stabilization funds when Renew Castle assumes ownership and continue coordinating Main Street events and downtown-incentive discussion.
