BZA orders fireworks vendor to remove six storage containers by Aug. 1 after neighbors raise fire and traffic concerns

LaPorte County’s BZA directed a Michigan City fireworks vendor to remove six shipping containers from a Highway 12 property by Aug. 1 after neighbors cited fire‑safety risks and frequent tractor‑trailer and semi parking.
Carter Madigan said the containers held overflow inventory from three stores and that last season the vendor used the site daily from May through mid‑July. Neighbors described previous incidents at other container sites and said the location sits near propane storage, pumps and other flammable materials. The petitioner said he would downsize the container count after this season; the board instead ordered complete removal by Aug. 1 and voted 3–2 in favor of that date.
Next steps: Building Commissioner's Office will inspect for compliance after Aug. 1 and will follow up on enforcement if containers remain.
