Laconia council accepts $11,756 federal JAG grant to buy police trailer; county to purchase active-shooter gear

The Laconia City Council on July 13 approved Resolution 2026-09 to accept a 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) totaling $11,756.
Councilors approved the measure after a public hearing earlier in the meeting and a brief reading and second reading on the floor. The council adopted the resolution by motion and a 6-0 vote and authorized the City Manager to sign documents related to the grant.
City staff explained the grant will be disbursed under a memorandum of understanding with Belknap County. The Laconia Police Department will use its portion of the award to purchase a utility trailer for transporting the department’s UTVs, while the Belknap County Sheriff’s Department will use its share to purchase active-shooter gear.
The resolution was moved for a second reading by Councilor Hildreth and later approved on a motion by Councilor Conant, seconded by Councilor Soucy. The motion passed with all in favor, 6-0.
No members of the public spoke at the July 13 public hearing on the grant. The council’s action authorizes the city manager to complete and sign any documents necessary to accept and allocate the funds.
