The Marion County Planning Commission used the end of its June 24 meeting to continue a work session on the comprehensive plan (chapter 1) and to discuss a public survey to guide the update. Commissioners reviewed the 2017 survey results, discussed lessons learned about question wording and outreach, and considered distribution trade‑offs between lower‑cost online tools and higher‑cost mailed or consultant‑assisted surveys that produce stronger statistical validity.
Commissioners agreed to have a commissioner and planning staff synthesize three input documents (a draft by a commissioner, an AI‑assisted supplement, and the 2017 survey) into a single draft questionnaire and to explore distribution methods that better reach unincorporated residents (mailings, library or courthouse kiosks, QR codes and in‑person outreach). One commissioner recommended clarifying survey demographics (for example, whether respondents live in or own property in unincorporated Marion County) so results can be analyzed by constituency.
The board asked staff to circulate a proposed draft survey ahead of the next meeting, and several commissioners emphasized that some outreach will require ‘boots on the ground’ in rural areas to raise response rates among older and less‑connected residents. The commission plans to continue work on survey content and public engagement at the next meeting.
