Woodson County commissioners say roughly $750,000 in cuts will be needed to balance the 2027 budget

Emily Franks led a staff presentation on the proposed 2027 budgets, outlining current budget projections, rising employee-benefit costs and a cash shortfall from 2026 that affects future forecasts. Franks said staff is reviewing options across departments to close an estimated shortfall of approximately $750,000 but did not identify final decisions on specific cuts.
The board discussed several areas under consideration. Commissioners and staff identified potential reductions to the Special Ambulance Capital Outlay Fund and to ambulance-related capital projects, potential trimming of the custodian budget, and possible adjustments to the Special Bridge Fund and Road & Bridge personnel costs. Commissioners also discussed not implementing a county-wide cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 as one mechanism to lower personnel costs.
The county scheduled its Revenue Neutral Rate hearing and its 2027 Budget hearing for Sept. 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ambulance Meeting Room.
