Portage County to seek spending options for roughly $35,000 left in Jagal Park grant

A presenter for Portage County’s parks program asked the Board of Commissioners to allow remaining funds from a 2024 Jagal Park grant to be spent on additional park amenities rather than returned to the state.
The presenter said most of the project work is complete but the initial bid came in over budget and the scope was revised. He told the board the revised project "came in about '94" and, reading aloud in the meeting, referenced a figure spoken as "$9,496,000"; he also said the project "looks very nice." The presenter reported about $35,000 remains in the grant and added, "The grant ends August 31, and we can... the state is favorable" to adjusting allowable uses so the money can purchase items such as trees or benches within Jagal Park.
Board members supported the idea in principle and the presenter said he will bring a formal resolution next week. Commissioner (motions) confirmed the resolution will not be presented this week but is expected at a subsequent meeting. The board emphasized any additional spending must remain within the same park and adhere to grant terms.
No dollar amount for the proposed amenities was committed at the meeting; the presenter estimated roughly six months would be sufficient to complete remaining tasks if the amendment is approved. The board did not vote on the request at this meeting; the presenter asked staff to proceed with drafting the resolution for the next meeting.
If commissioners approve the resolution next week, staff indicated they will work with the state to document allowable uses in order to expend the remaining funds before the stated grant deadline.
