Harpersville council approves routine business; fire chief reports grant, sheriff services clarified

Mayor Theoangelo Perkins called the Harpersville Town Council to order at 5:33 p.m. on June 15, 2026, and the council confirmed a quorum was present.
The council quickly moved through routine business. Councilmember Martin Dates moved to approve the June 15 agenda as written; Councilmember Malynda McLaughlin seconded and Mayor Perkins declared the motion passed by unanimous voice vote. Councilmember Beverly Johnson then moved to approve the June 1 meeting minutes, a motion seconded by Councilmember Ryan Harry and approved unanimously. Town Clerk/Treasurer Amber Gardner presented invoices; Councilmember Johnson moved to approve all invoices as submitted, Councilmember Dates seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
In department reports, Fire Chief Lewis told the council the department had received a grant from the Shelby County Fire Chief Association and provided a list of equipment purchased with those funds. Chief Lewis also noted the department received a letter of appreciation from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for assistance in a recent missing-child case. Police Chief Dennis reviewed the department’s monthly statistics and reported that an officer involved in a recent car accident has returned to light duty.
During the council’s public comment period, resident David Sanders asked for clarification about circulating rumors that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office had withdrawn services in the area. Police Chief Dennis said the announcement that prompted confusion related to the City of Chelsea’s decision to establish its own police department; he clarified that, to his understanding, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has not withdrawn services from Vincent, Westover or Harpersville.
Officials closed the meeting with routine scheduling items and announcements. The council noted upcoming board and committee meetings, that town offices would be closed Friday, June 19 for the Juneteenth holiday, and that the July 6 council meeting (previously listed) would be canceled. With no further business, Councilmember William Carter moved to adjourn, Councilmember Malynda McLaughlin seconded, and Mayor Perkins adjourned the meeting at 5:52 p.m.
