Bridgehampton Civic seeks expansion of downtown historic district; expert report due mid-October

Tom Watson, chair of the Bridgehampton Civic Association’s historic-district committee, asked the Landmarks Board to consider an application to extend the downtown historic district to nearby hamlet-center streets. "So I'm Tom Watson, and I'm with the Bridgehampton Civic Association," Watson said, and described the group’s plan to follow the 2004 Hamlet Center map as a basis for the proposed expansion.
Watson said the civic hired preservation consultant Jackie Peu Duvalon of JPD Preservation Consulting to prepare an expert report and estimated the study will examine roughly 370 properties, "about a a a little more, a little less, but around that," with roughly 170 potential contributing resources; Watson said he expects the report by mid-October.
Board members discussed whether the Landmarks Board should act as a co-applicant and noted the role of town staff and the town historian in preparing a formal application. The chair said the board would like to review the expert report and that staff and the town historian Julie Green would help refine the final application and outreach plan.
Watson said the Civic plans to use published Southampton town documents to guide community education and outreach rather than create new materials, and offered to supply maps, Excel property lists and visual aids to the board. He left contact information and said he would provide a color map contrasting the existing downtown district and the proposed expansion for board review.
The board did not take formal action on the proposal at the meeting; staff and board members signaled they would review the forthcoming expert report and schedule public hearings and neighborhood outreach as the application progresses.
