The Bremer County Board of Supervisors approved an employee’s request to extend unpaid medical leave for up to six months after the employee exhausted paid leave.
Landon, the county engineer, described the personnel situation and said the department has approved the initial 30 days; the board was asked to approve an additional extension to allow the employee more recovery time while keeping the position open where practical.
Barb (county human-resources representative) explained the terms and financial responsibilities: “In a case like this, the department head can extend an immediate 30 day leave of absence. During that first 30 day leave of absence, he still gets standard benefits from the county. If the board would approve a 6 month up to a 6 month extension on this, he would be required to pay full benefits,” Barb said, adding that the employee had been informed and staff would coordinate billing and medical updates.
The board moved and seconded the extension request and approved it by voice vote. Supervisors noted the county will attempt to hold the position open but cannot guarantee the same job or shift if reorganization or cutbacks occur during the leave period.
Implementation: the department will meet with the employee to set benefit-payment arrangements and will provide periodic medical updates to the board as appropriate.
