Oxford City’s board on May 19 approved a resolution authorizing submission of an FY2026 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant application for safety and signal improvements on West Jackson near the Walmart/Mall Drive area.
Norman Nichols told the board the proposed project would include a signal at Mall Drive and possible widening or signal upgrades at the Walmart access. He said the estimated total project cost is $7,600,000, with an anticipated 80% grant share and 20% city match (about $1,600,000). Nichols said Wagner Engineering would prepare and submit the application and that the city has been coordinating with Rep. Roger Wicker’s office to seek congressional inclusion for related transportation funds.
The board moved, seconded and approved a resolution authorizing submittal of the SS4A application. The Mayor noted the city is included for $5,000,000 in a T/HUD bill as a separate congressional funding inclusion but stressed that is an early step and not a guaranteed award.
Why this matters: If funded, the project would deliver multimillion-dollar safety and traffic improvements at a corridor with reported needs; approval authorizes staff to pursue federal SS4A funding and commit to a local match if awarded.
