Jenkins Day set for Aug. 21–22; community group outlines cultural center vision for East Jenkins

Organizers updated the council on community events and local redevelopment ideas on May 4.
Resident organizer (S10) said Jenkins Day will be Aug. 21–22 and described family-focused activities including inflatable attractions, kids’ day with free face painting, a time capsule project, contests, chalk art and a vendor-tent application process. "It's August the 21st 22nd," S10 said, and asked council members to share ideas and vendor contacts. April (staff) will help collect submissions and applications.
A separate presenter (S11) described a concept for the East Jenkins Old Army Goods and Music Shop corridor: a mix of small food/coffee/record retail, an antique/thrift area, rentable meeting space, interactive arts programming and a small wellness studio, plus upstairs apartments for long- and short-term rentals. "Our vision is that it needs to be more of a culture center," S11 said, adding the group has contacted the Kentucky River Area Development for support.
Council members praised the plans and noted upcoming amphitheater events and fundraisers. No formal council action was recorded on either the Jenkins Day logistics or the building-conversion concept during the May 4 meeting.
