During the April 20 meeting Girard city staff and council discussed options for the downtown square bump-outs and related landscaping. Staff reported preliminary estimates for re-landscaping ranged from about $80,000 to $140,000; replacing bump-outs with concrete would cost roughly $200,000 to $400,000; and adding planters and benches carried estimates between $223,000 and $400,000. Staff also said the city still owed approximately $435,000 associated with the square project.
Council members directed staff to remove the existing evergreen plantings and come back with additional design options and cost estimates. Council did not adopt any design or capital appropriation at this meeting. The minutes indicate staff may pursue grant opportunities to offset costs.
Because the discussion was exploratory, a formal vote or contract authorization was not recorded in the minutes; council will consider detailed proposals and funding options in a future meeting.
