The Warren County Economic Development Commission voted May 18 to proceed with an earlier $500 strategic-plan option proposed by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, rather than a $35,000 plan urged by board member Jim Whitley. The motion to adopt the $500 plan was moved by Stanley Jones and seconded; all members voted in favor except Whitley, who opposed.
Community and Economic Development Director McKinley Perkinson told the board she supported moving forward with the NC Commerce plan and said County Manager Crystal Smith had emailed her support for that approach. The board discussed the two options during a lengthy conversation before the roll call.
The decision preserves the lower-cost planning route recommended earlier in the year and avoids the higher professional-services expense Whitley proposed. The board did not instruct staff to pursue any additional budgeting or solicitations for an expanded plan at this meeting.
Next steps: staff will proceed with implementing the previously proposed NC Commerce plan and report back to the board with any follow-up items or scheduling details.
