Frontenac Public Schools board approves service contracts, handbook and grants; tables some facilities items

The Frontenac Unified School District 249 Board of Education approved multiple service contracts, the FHS student handbook for 2026–27 and several funding items at its May 11 meeting, while deferring decisions on transportation and HVAC services.
Business Manager and Clerk Julie Underwood reviewed year-end budget projections for the district before the board moved through consent items and several contract renewals. The board voted 7-0 to approve Greenbush services for 2026–27, including Parents as Teachers ($11,500), Student Enrichment Services ($14,000), School Improvement Services ($16,928), PDP Toolbox ($3,157.50), and other listed consortium fees; the approval was moved by Seth Nutt and seconded by Lindsay Smith.
The board also approved renewal of Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) membership for $11,000.34 and legal services for $3,100 on a 7-0 vote after a motion by Stacy Ferraro and a second from Scott Kunshek. The board accepted a $3,000 chocolate milk grant for the strength and conditioning program on a 7-0 vote, and granted permission for four students to pursue early graduation in December 2026 (Gavin Henderson, Aiden Plummer, Ariana Ortega and Eric James “EJ” Withnell).
The board approved an MOU with CHCSEK to continue current services for 2026–27 on a 6-1 vote, with Board Member Scott Kunshek recorded as voting against the motion that was moved by Lindsay Smith and seconded by Seth Nutt.
District Coordinator Brandy Stanley reported the van purchase RFP was awarded to Bitner Motors for a 2025 Chrysler Pacifica (the meeting transcript spelled the model vendor name as “Crysler”). The board also heard an update on the early childcare center from Kristina Cullison and was told Greenbush Health renewal rates were not yet available.
On procedural items, the board reached consensus to table consideration of bus activity cameras to allow staff to gather additional quotes and deferred the HVAC annual service until the June meeting.
The meeting included reports from elementary and junior-high principals and administrative updates on insurance alignment, a track logo project, a Jock’s Nitch shoe donation and a Safe & Secure Schools Grant. The board adjourned at 8:29 PM.
