The Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327 Board of Education on Aug. 12, 2024 approved use of PILOT funds to meet matching requirements for grant-funded safety and audiovisual projects.
The board authorized $10,871 in PILOT funds to provide the local match required by a Kansas State Department of Education Safe and Secure Schools grant; KSDE awarded $9,411 to replace select surveillance cameras at all three district buildings. The board also approved using PILOT funds to complete purchase of an estimated $11,000 audio‑visual system for the district performing arts center (PAC), with up to $1,000 allowed for additional electrical work.
Board members noted prior philanthropic support for the PAC project, including $10,000 from the Dane Hansen Foundation and $20,000 from the Stumps Foundation. The board accepted additional gifts and grants by unanimous vote, including $708.51 from VFW Post 6485 and American Legion Post 174 for a Bearcat highway sign; $7,813.86 from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s "Stay Positive Test Negative" initiative; $12.80 from Casey’s Cash for the Classroom; and $2,025 from the Kanopolis Sunflower Civics Club and patrons for a KMS walking path.
Jake Svaty moved to authorize the PILOT match for the surveillance grant; David Hand seconded. Cynthia Edgerle moved to authorize PILOT funds for the PAC audiovisual purchase and to cap extra electrical costs at $1,000; Mr. Svaty seconded the motion. Both motions passed 6-0.
The board recorded these actions as part of its broader facilities and safety planning.
