Fire district outlines 2025 plans as resident urges emergency preparedness

Representatives from Johnson County Fire District No. 1 attended the Oct. 24 Council meeting to describe short‑term and long‑term plans for 2025 and how those plans will affect budgets. The presentation covered staffing and benefits, equipment and facility upkeep, and a strategic plan to improve transparency and future budgeting. Mayor Roberts thanked the district and called public safety the city’s highest priority.

During public comment, resident Mr. Lafalce urged the City to host tabletop emergency exercises for staff and the community, said he had little confidence in FEMA’s current operations based on recent hurricane responses and suggested Edgerton consider its own police force in the event of a countywide disaster. Councilmember Ron Conus, who noted more than a decade with FEMA, encouraged the idea of renewed tabletop exercises and endorsed local preparedness. Councilmember Deb Lebakken clarified that an immediate FEMA relief payment referenced by the speaker was an initial payment and that residents can apply for further assistance.

Earlier in the meeting, the two candidates for Johnson County Sheriff spoke briefly to introduce themselves; both "agreed that the American farmer is what builds America and puts food on our tables," and discussed approaches to the community officer role if elected.
