Edgerton council votes 3-1 not to contribute $1,310 to Johnson County homeless shelter

The Edgerton City Council on July 25 voted 3-1 not to include $1,310.22 in the 2025 budget to support Johnson County’s new homeless services center. City Administrator Beth Linn summarized the county’s request and the per-city share of $1,310.22.
Councilmember Clay Longanecker moved to approve the funding but did not receive a second. Councilmember Josh Lewis then moved not to fund the request; Councilmember Ron Conus seconded and the motion passed with Lewis, Conus and Deb Lebakken voting yes and Longanecker voting no.
Longanecker said the contribution would be to "help our fellow man," while Councilmember Ron Conus argued the shelter should be privately funded: "I think it should be privately funded," Conus said. Mayor Roberts said he had not realized cities would be asked to fund the project and noted uncertainty about how many Edgerton residents would use the facility. The council provided no funding direction to staff to include the amount in the 2025 budget.
